What Are Herbal Bitters? A Short History of an Old Tradition

Long before "wellness" was a category on a store shelf, herbal bitters were a kitchen staple across many traditions — small amounts of botanical liquid, taken before or after a meal, meant to support digestion and everyday comfort.

Bitters are typically made by steeping roots, barks, seeds, or fruit in a liquid base over time. The "bitter" taste itself is the point — it's part of why these preparations have stuck around for generations in botanical traditions, including the Afro-Caribbean and West African herbal practices Dr. Ogun Sacred Healing draws from.

Our Sour Sop Bitters is a modern, liquid take on that tradition — built around soursop (graviola), an ingredient with a long history of traditional use. Like every new formula, it's currently a limited test release while we gather feedback before any wider rollout.
